This listing is for 6 cuttings (unrooted) of staghorn cholla cactus. Each cuttings are 4-6 inches long.
The staghorn cholla (Cylindropuntia versicolor) is a drought-tolerant cactus found in the southwestern United States. Staghorn cholla can be propagated from cuttings. The cut end should be allowed to be callous for 3-7 days before planting in well-drained soil. Staghorn cholla typically grows 3 to 8 feet tall, but can reach up to 15 feet.
Flowers: The flowers can be various colors, including red, yellow, or vivid pink, and are produced in the spring and early summer.
Fruits: Staghorn cholla produces smooth, rounded, spineless fruits that remain on the plant for a long time, sometimes forming short chains.
Spines: The spines are relatively short, usually less than 0.7 inches long, and arranged in neat clusters.
Habitat: It thrives in sandy soils, washes, and slopes in arid and semi-arid environments.
Care and cultivation: Watering: Staghorn cholla is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. Watering every week is sufficient in the spring and summer, no need to water in winter.
Sunlight: It thrives in full sun.
Soil: Well-drained soil is important to prevent root rot.
Fertilizing: A high-nitrogen fertilizer can be used monthly during the active growth period (spring and summer) at a quarter strength.
Pruning: Pruning is best done in early spring to remove dead growth and promote airflow.
Edible parts: It is a desert survival food. Some Native American tribes have historically harvested and eaten the buds and fruits of the staghorn cholla after carefully removing the spines.
